Abstract

Pediatric cataract surgery is by itself extremely challenging. Trauma to the lens and anterior segement structures further complicates the cataract surgery by several folds. Preoperative challenges include assesment of extent of damage to anterior segment structures – Iris, lens capsule, angle structures, zonules, measuring IOP in scarred cornea, keratoemtry & IOL power calculation. Furthermore, corneal scarring , posterior synechiae, capsular rupture , capsular plaques & extrusion of lens matter, vitreous in AC can obscure visualization and complicate the course of surgery. Pediatric cataract is a "master of surprises" and often startles the surgeons with new challenges during surgery like subluxation, capsular rupture, PC dehiscence, vitreous loss, suboptimal capsular support. This video will serve as teaching tool for novice pediatric cataract surgeons demonstrating several skills that can help in "Taming the master of surprises" leading to excellent surgical & visual outcomes
