FP2062 : Paediatric strabismus cases at a tertiary eye care hospital in South India: A Comprehensive Study

Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the clinical profile of strabismus in children aged 0 to 18 years. The study included all children presenting with strabismus between 0-18 years of age. The results of this study unveiled that paediatric strabismus was predominantly characterized by comitant type. Male:Female ratio was nearly equal at 51:49 ratio. In the 0-5 age group, esotropia was the prevailing condition, while in the 5-11 age group, exotropia took precedence. Among all cases of strabismus, intermittent exotropia was the most commonly observed at 49%, followed by esotropia at 41%, and with the remaining cases manifesting other forms. 59% were congenital, while 41% were acquired. Notably, in the 5-11 age group, 62% of acquired cases were linked to extensive screen time usage. This study underscores the potential association between screen time usage and strabismus, indicating that modern screen time habits may play a contributory role in the development of strabismus.
