FP0956 : Comprehensive Analysis of Factors Influencing Surgical Outcomes in Traumatic Pediatric Cataracts

Abstract

Study Design
Retrospective Study
Purpose
This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing final visual acuity in pediatric traumatic cataracts. A guidebook of the right choices may make decision making more favorable.
Methods
Data of patients who presented with traumatic cataracts were reviewed retrospectively(2016-2019). We evaluated multiple factors including age / gender, trauma type; duration between the time of trauma & surgery; surgical method used; and type of IOL and complications.
Results
A total of 41 eyes from 39 patients (< 16 years) were included in the study. The mean age was 8.2 ± 3.9 years. Primary IOL implantation was the chosen approach for 77.9% of the eyes. Improvement of BCVA to around 0.7 logMAR in 1st week post op was noticeable in 69.9% of the 41 eyes. Choice of procedure including doing a PPC and AV, influenced final BCVA to the better.
Conclusion
Study demonstrates that proper decision making while planning for & during the surgery does influence the BCVA.
