Abstract

To evaluate the influence of silicone oil (SO) tamponade on retinal and sub foveal choroidal thickness and visual acuity in patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment .Methods: Retrospective case series of 41 consecutive patients. BCVA, CRT & SFT were measured with SO and at 3 months after SOR. Results: 41 patients with age of 56.1 ± 15.2 yrs , average tamponade 151 ± 54 days. CMT increased from 249 ± 50 µm before to 279 ± 48 µm after SOR (P < 0.001),. A mean change of 26 µm was found in the inner retinal layers (P < 0.001). Mean SFT between the operated and fellow eyes before SOR was -14.8 microns & at 3 months after SOR was -13.4 microns . BCVA improved from 0.85 ± 0.97 log MAR with SO tamponade to 0.34 ± 0.28 log MAR after SOR (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: SO tamponade causes a transient decrease in CMT, mainly in the inner layers. After SOR,CMT resembles that of the fellow eyes. Choroidal thinning did not improve after SO removal.
