Abstract

To the report 20-year follow-up data for patients receiving scleral buckle for primary
rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).Methods Nonconsecutive, retrospective case series of
120 eyes with 20 years follow-up data. Results
classified into 3: retina reattached with 1 procedure; retina reattached with ≥2 vitreoretinal
procedures; or retina detached at 20 years. Complication during follow up analyzed Results 99 eyes
(82%) had reattachment with 1 procedure and final BCVA of 6/12. 15 eyes (13%) reattached
after more additional VR procedures, with final BCVA of 20/50.Six eyes (5%)
detached at the 20-year follow-up with NLP.Complications during long term followup were buckle
infection (6 eyes), migration of implant (2 eyes), scleral abscess & scleral granuloma in 2
Conclusions SB for primary RRD achieves anatomical and functional efficacy in the
majority of eyes at 20 years' follow-up. The 1-operation success rate was 82%, overall success rate
was 95%, and median final BCVA was 6/12.
