FP0344 : SURGICAL APPROACHES TO A POSTERIOR POLAR CATARACT

Abstract

Closed chamber technique, avoiding hydrodissection – instead performing hydrodelineation and using modest to low phaco parameters is the key.PURPOSE:To provide a comprehensive overview of surgical methods used in the emulsification of posterior polar cataracts (PPCs).METHODS: It was a retrospective study of 50 eyes of patients undergoing surgery for PPC.Controlled hydrodelineation was used to separate the endonucleus with limited viscodissection. Phacoemulsification was then carried out by making a “V” shaped nucleo fractis with the phaco tip. . RESULTS:The overall rate of PCR was 12% (6 out of 50 eyes). Of the 6 eyes, 4 eyes had been documented to have a pre-existing posterior capsular defect. The rate of “on table” PCR, that is, PCR occurring intraoperatively was only 4% (2 of 76 eyes). CONCLUSION: Using a combination of surgical techniques of V groove for nucleofractis and removal of epinucleus by viscodissection can result in a low rate of PCR.
