FP2846 : Magical effects of glycerin used per-operatively to enhance visualization in cases of corneal edema.

Abstract

Glycerin is regarded as one of the most effective humectant. It can be used as an Ophthalmic demulcent, lubricating the eye’s mucous membrane and surface. In the past it was used per-operatively to almost instantly decrease corneal edema as it is hygroscopic and absorbs water. We present a series of 10 cases where 1-2 drops of commercially available Glycerin were applied to the cornea, washed off with normal saline and instantly it provided better visualization during the surgery. To maintain sterility, we can use betadine eye drop along with eye drop pro-paracain. With time the use of Glycerin-the “underrated” substance has dwindled. Topical Glycerin is a simple, cheap, non-toxic and effective modality that can be used intra-operatively with huge impact. 10/10 eyes with corneal edema showed considerable regression of corneal edema and better visualization intra-operatively.
