Abstract
Study design: Retrospective cohort study
Purpose: There is a definite lack of protocol in treatment of nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) with concomitant cataract. Task force guidelines of our parent body are also hovered with doubt. This study aims to generate a consensus in treatment of NLDO with concomitant cataract.
Method: Case records of patients undergoing cataract surgery in 1 year period evaluated. Lacrimal irrigation was used for testing the NLD. Those treated for NLDO and those left untreated were noted.Post operative endophthalmitis (POE) if any was noted.
Results: Of the 1679 eyes slotted for cataract surgery, NLDO was found in 53 eyes (4.34%). 42 of them were treated for NLDO (DCT – 34, DCR-8). 11 eyes with clear fluid regurgitation, with no evident epiphora or conjunctival discharge underwent cataract surgery under standard antibiotic cover.1 eye reported POE (NLD patent).
Conclusion:Not all eyes with NLDO needs treatment. Risk factors for POE must be well recognised.
