Abstract
Study Design – Observational Study
Purpose – Careful slit lamp examination in all mature cataract patients for determining method of cataract extraction and increase predictability of cataract surgery.
Methods – 112 patients were examined over a period of 6 months. Detailed slit lamp examination was performed in pre-holding room just before the surgery. Evaluation of cornea, AC depth and pupil dilatation status was done. Anatomical position of lens, grading and layers of nucleus, anterior capsule status, zonular stability, associated conditions like pseudoexfoliation, etc. was documented. Other eye evaluation was also done to look for lens and fundus details.
Results – A wide range of anatomical variations were noted like shallow/deep AC, liquified cortex, anterior capsular calcifications, subluxation and dealt accordingly.
Conclusion – Every mature cataract and its anatomical variations should be evaluated in pre-holding area on slit lamp as it comes with different challenges.
