FP2212 : Quality of life, psychological status & eye care barriers in sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy

Abstract

Study design: cross sectional observational study
Purpose: To assess quality of life, psychological status and eye-care barriers in patients with sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR)
Methods: Patients aged ≥ 18 years, diagnosed with PDR & DME were administered questionnaires for assessment of vision-related QOL (NEI-VFQ-25), psychological status (HADS), and eye care barriers (KAP). Socio-demographic profile & associated comorbidities were noted.
Results: 92 patients were included (67% males, 42% urban & 50% lower-middle class). Those having stroke had higher anxiety (p=0.005) and elderly people had higher depression scores (p=0.035). Rural patients, unemployed and PDR patients had lower VFQ scores after adjusting for visual acuity in better eye. Patients with lower VFQ had higher anxiety (p=0.03) and depressions scores (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Rural, elderly & low income patients with STDR have lower vision related QOL with subsequent higher symptoms of anxiety & depression.
