FP2012 : Pachy-vessel: A potential risk factor for Choroidal neo-vascularisation?

Abstract

Study design:Retrospective observational study
Purpose:To correlate choroidal morphological changes in patients with treatment naïve Type-1 choroidal neo-vascularisation (CNV).
Methods:Swept-Source OCTs of patients with type-1 CNV and age matched controls were evaluated for presence/distribution of pachy vessel/s,sub-foveal and sub-CNV choroidal thickness.Sub-foveal Lumen-to-total Choroid (L/C) ratios were calculated after binarization and thresholding of extracted SS-OCT images using Image J software.
Results:28 eyes/19 patients and 30 age-matched controls reviewed.Pachy-vessel/s noted in sub-foveal choroid in 26/28 eyes with CNV vs. 5/30 in control (RR=5.57;95% CI, P< 0.0001).Mean SFCT was similar between the 2 groups(249.2 vs. 276.4 microns;P= 0.276). SFCT and SCCT were higher in PCNV(n=10) sub-group than typical nAMD(n=18).Mean SF L/C was highest in PCNV sub-group.
Conclusions: Pachy-vessel presence can be considered a potential risk factor for future development of type-1 CNV.
