FP2013 : Retinopathy of Prematurity: a Race Against Time.

Abstract

A preterm baby born at gestational age of 29 wks with birth weight of 990g having RDS and on mechanical ventilation for 25 days, was referred for ROP screening at 30 days age. He was having both eyes Stage 2 Zone 2 ROP with Plus disease and was advised laser. Baby developed apnea on the same day and was ventilated and was found to have Sepsis and was clinically unstable. Hence, patient could not be treated with laser at that time. Baby was referred for follow up after 15 days and was found as having both eyes Stage 4B ROP with vitreous hemorrhage and fibrovascular membrane over the disc. Patient underwent laser treatment for both eyes. Patient was referred for surgical treatment where he underwent both eyes pars plana lensectomy with total PPV with endolaser. We ask the question, if this rapid progression could have been avoided with earlier first screening and providing treatment in the incubator itself or use of IntraVit antiVGEF in premature babies with multiple morbidities.
