FP1867 : Novice Surgeons Versus Experienced surgeons:A Comparison of Performances on MSICS surgical Simulator

Abstract

Purpose: In this study we aim to analyze the effort taken by the experienced surgeons to get 3 satisfactory attempts at Continuous Curvilinear Capsulorrhexis(CCC) on the MSICS (manual small incision cataract surgery) simulator and compare it to that of novices
Methods: We classified surgeons into 2 groups based on their surgical experience 1.Novices(<25 SICS) 2.Experienced surgeons(>10000 SICS) and assessed the step of CCC on simulator
Results: Independent sample t test showed that the number of attempts taken to achieve 3 satisfactory CCC attempts by the novices are statistically significantly higher compared to the experienced surgeons (25.67±20.618 vs 9.53±3.77, p= 0.006).Similar results were seen with complications- sizing(26.6±27.00 vs 6.73±4.99, p=0.009), Zonular dialysis (14.87±14.81 vs 2.33±2.19, p=0.003), run away(5.53±6.05vs0.92±1.038, p= 0.012) all more in novices.
Conclusion: Experienced surgeons needed lesser number of attempts and had lesser complications on simulator.
