FP1779 : Effect of Nepafenac on choroidal thickness after cataract surgery in diabetics without retinopathy

Abstract

Study Design: A prospective randomized control study
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of topical nepafenac 0.1% on choroidal thickness of diabetic patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Method: This study included 50 eyes of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients without retinopathy changes. Patients were randomized (1:1) to topical nepafenac or vehicle once-daily starting from a day before surgery continuing till 1 month post op. Choroidal thickness (CT) measurements at 5 points (sub-foveal, 500µm temporal, nasal, superior & inferior to fovea) were measured using EDI-OCT preoperatively, 1 week & 1 month postoperatively.
Results: The decrease in choroidal thickness following cataract surgery was significantly lower in nepafenac group as compared to vehicle group.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that topical nepafenac reduces choroidal thinning which occurs following cataract surgery in diabetic patients, thus decreases the risk of progression to diabetic retinopathy.
