FP0150 : Visual cycle modulators in the treatment of Geographic atrophy (GA) – a review

Abstract

GA is the late stage manifestation of ARMD and is one of the leading cause of low vision in the elderly.
Many therapeutic approaches like visual cycle modulation, neuroprotection, cell-based therapy, inflammation suppression and complement inhibition have been investigated to reduce the progression of atrophy with variable results.
Visual cycle modulators are drugs that slow down the visual cycle by various mechanisms. It is proposed that these drugs stop or reduce the accumulation of toxic material (lipofuscin) in the retina, and hence, they may be able to slow down vision loss. Emixustat hydrochloride, Fenretinide, ALK-001 a deuterated derivative of vitamin A are the visual cycle modulator drugs that have completed phase 2/3 clinical trials and are under investigation. CU239 and A1120 are other molecules which are being investigated but have still not entered the clinical trials.
We present the literature review of visual cycle modulator drugs for the treatment of GA.
