FP1459 : Intermittent exotropia: a study of outcomes, in a tertiary care centre in north Kerala.

Abstract

Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is an eye condition characterized by an outward deviation of one or both eyes. We studied the clinical features and treatment outcomes of 997 patients with IXT over a period of 2 years. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 997 patients with IXT treated at our clinic between 2021 and 2023.Results: The mean age of the patients was 10.2 years (range 3-19 years), and the majority were male (53%). The mean angle of deviation was 15 degrees (range 5-40 degrees).Treatment:A total of 12.3% of the patients underwent surgery to correct their IXT, while the remaining 87.7% were treated conservatively with overminus correction, refractive correction, and convergence exercises.Outcomes: At the end of the study, 85% of the patients had good to excellent outcomes, with a mean angle of deviation of less than 5 degrees. Conclusion: Intermittent exotropia is an eye condition that can be effectively treated with both conservative and surgical management.
