FP1406 : Ankyloblepharon Filiforme Adnatum in a Newborn

Abstract

Introduction: Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum is a rare benign congenital anomaly which comprises of single or multiple fine soft tissue bands connecting the upper and lower lid margins leading to reduced palpebral fissure opening.
Case report: A full term, 2.1 kg, male baby was referred for partially fused upper and lower eyelids in left eye. Prenatal screening was unremarkable. On local examination, the palpebral fissure opening of left eye was 4mm with a soft tissue band connecting both the lids just temporal to the centre. Right eye examination was normal. Systemic examination was unremarkable. The band of tissue was clamped using epilation forceps for 10 seconds and margins were excised using Vanna’s scissors at the level of eyelid margins with subsequent normal eye opening.
Conclusion: Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum may present as a solitary anomaly in an otherwise healthy infant. The visual prognosis is usually good if timely intervention is done.
