Abstract
STUDY DESIGN- Retrospective case series
PURPOSE- To report cases of BRVO in patients <55 years.
METHODS- Ten patients who visited ophthalmology OPD with BRVO were identified & demographic data, history, complete ophthalmic examination, various imaging studies, blood workup, treatment & outcomes were investigated. Risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, smoking, OCP use, hypercoagulable lab abnormalities), & final visual acuity (VA) were recorded & compared.
RESULTS- According to our study, 60% young patients had multiple co-morbidities & 30% had hyperhomocysteinemia. BRVO was associated with high BMI but not with smoking or HRT.
CONCLUSION- Given such findings, it is recommended that any young patient presenting with BRVO & systemic risk factors should be thoroughly evaluated. Initial baseline VA as well as retinal perfusion are strong predictors of final visual outcomes.
