FP1279 : Microbial analysis and sensitivity pattern in suture related corneal infections

Abstract

Study design: Retrospective
Purpose: Analysis of microorganisms responsible for suture related infections and determination of their drug susceptibility pattern.
Methods: Retrospective study in a tertiary care hospital in South India with 66 suture related infection samples taken from Jan 2022 to June 2023
Results: Out of 66 cases, Bacteria were the frequently isolated with 22 (68.75%) cases followed by fungus in 5 (15.63%), mixed in 3 (9.37%), yeast in 2 (6.25%) cases. No growth occurred in 34 (51.51%) isolates. Streptococcus Pneumoniae (27.78%) was the most predominant bacterial species. Mean age study group is 53 years. 15 (71%) cases had the Bacteria sensitive to Chloramphenicol or Moxifloxacin.
Conclusion: Gram Positive Bacteria are the common cause of Suture related infections, and it may be preferable to start Chloramphenicol as empirical therapy in cases with suture related corneal infections.
