Abstract
Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Purpose: To study association of Aggressive Posterior Retinopathy of Prematurity (AROP) in multiple births due to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and its prevalance, severity, disease quiescence (DQ). Methodology: 10 babies born of IVF out of 53 babies with 106 AROP eyes studied. Results: Out of 53 AROP babies, 10 babies with 20 AROP eyes (18.9%) born by IVF conceptions, of which 9 (90%) born as twin births. Higher number of twin births with AROP eyes born of IVF noted. Very low birth weight (VLBW) is a consistent feature in twin births. No difference in incidence, severity of ROP between singleton and twin births amongst IVF with AROP noted. Of IVF babies with AROP, 30% were in Stage II disease, 20% in Stage III, 20% in Stage IV. All treated with Anti-VEGFs and Laser; all 20 AROP eyes (100%) showed DQ. Conclusion: IVF conceptions result in multiple births with LBW resulting in AROP activation which can normalise with early aggressive treatment.
