Abstract

Schwannomas of the orbit are rare 1-6% of all orbital tumors. In orbit these are usually U/L,may arise from orbital nerves.Material and methods-A 45yr/M presented with a painless, slowly growing mass in the left inferior orbit for 4 yrs.O/E-Va in both eyes 20/20 unaided.The left side- a solid,non-tender,mobile mass 30mmx21mm in the inferior orbit.There was superiorly globe displacement,ocular motility was full.Other findings of both the eye normal.MRI brain+orbit–intraconal/extraconal mass 23mmx21mmx37mm involving left inferior rectus pushing globe anteriorly-neurofibroma.Left eye excision biopsy done and showed schwannoma.Result–there was complete excision of tumor,lower lid swelling subsided after 20days.Conclusion-Surgical excision is the TOC and tumor should be removed intact at the earliest to prevent compression of the optic nerve,recurrence ,intracranial extension. In our patient we were successful in achieving the above objectives with timely and complete excision of the tumor
