Abstract
A 3 year restrospective study was done of 49 patients who had granuloma after undergoing pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft with glue/suture. Purpose We wanted to analyse whether treating granuloma medically had any benefit over surgical excision. Result 2941 pterygiums were operated over a period of 3 years of which 49 had granuloma.42 were first treated medically and 7 underwent surgical excision in the first visit. All surgically treated cases showed resolution with only 1 showing recurrence. Out of the 42 medically treated cases;21 resolved ,17 did not resolve and 6 were lost to follow up. Out of the 17 medically unresolved cases; 10 finally underwent surgical excision with no recurrence. Conclusion Only 50% granulomas resolved when treated medically whereas 94.1% resolved with no recurrence after surgical excision.
