Abstract
Purpose To study the visual acuity outcomes and early complications of cataract surgery in patients with diabetes in tertiary care hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Study setting:Ophthalmology OPD, Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni.
Study design:Descriptive longitudinal,Sample size: 110 Sampling method:Purposive sampling
RESULT Diabetes leads to an increase in age related cataract development.80% had type 2 diabetes without DR, 19% non-proliferative DR, and0.9%proliferative DR. BCVA of 6/12 or better was achieved in 77.27% of the cases.21.81% had BCVA of 6/24 – 6/18. 0.9% had BCVA < 6/36.Early complications were corneal edema 54%, reaction in anterior chamber 72%,raised IOP 13%,iris prolapse 4.5%,hyphaema1.8%, wound leak 5%,TASS 0.9%,endophthalmitis 0.9%.
Conclusion The improvement in BCVA after surgery indicates that cataract surgery can effectively address the visual impairment caused by cataracts in diabetic patients, potentially improving their overall quality of life and visual function.
