VT0510 : Back from the point of no return- The Extreme Retina

Abstract

The challenges in retinal detachment post trauma include poor visualization, severe scarring, gross detachments, intraocular hemorrhage and distorted globe anatomy.Surgeons are often posed with continuation of the challenges in the post-operative period too.Hypotony, patient counselling regarding the limited visual potential and rehabilitation can be a daunting task for mist VR surgeons.
In this video,we showcase 3 case scenarios, managed post extensive trauma- where the patients recovered useful vision
1. Post missile injury- total RD with retinal incarceration at wound, and submacular hemorrhage
2. Closed funnel RD post globe rupture
3. Post bomb blast management of extensive scar tissue and a total RD using open sky vitrectomy and temporary KPRO
Although all these case scenarios appear to have reached the point of no return or salvage, we were able to successfully settle the retina in all cases and provide the patient with ambulatory vision in their only seeing eye.
