FP2248 : Oral mucous membrane graft with synthetic orbital implant for the management of contracted socket

Abstract

Study design-Retrospective study
Purpose-To evaluate outcomes of use of oral mucous membrane graft (MMG) with synthetic (PMMA) orbital implant for management of contracted socket in primary/secondary anophthalmos.
Method-Review of 12 eyes with contracted socket due to primary (4, 36%) or secondary anophthalmos (6, 64%). Contracted socket-Gr II-2,17%;Gr III-3,25%;GrIV-58%. All eyes underwent socket reconstruction surgery using PMMA orbital implant for volume enhancement & oral MMG for surface augmentation with fornix formation and conformer placement under GA. Sequential suture removal was followed by custom ocular prosthesis (COP) fitting after 6-8 weeks.
Results-All (100%) patients showed good volume enhancement and deep fornices at 6-8 weeks of surgery and were fitted with COP showing excellent cosmesis. At mean follow up of 20 (6-36) months they continue to show stable COP and cosmesis.
Conclusions-Use of oral MMG with synthetic orbital implant helps in providing excellent cosmesis
