FP1350 : Comparison of Handshake(HS) vs extraocular needle guided haptic insertion technique(X-NIT) for SFIOL

Abstract

Conventional Scleral fixation Intraocular lens (SFIOL) poses the challenge of intraocular manipulation of haptics. To compare the visual outcome, complication rate and efficacy of (X-NIT) for SFIOL versus the conventional HS technique.
A retrospective study was conducted on 156 patients requiring secondary IOL implantation following complicated cataract surgery or ocular trauma, over 4 years. Surgeries done by 4 experienced vitreo-retinal surgeons with follow up period of 3 months.
Out of 156 eyes- 76 underwent HS and 80 underwent X-NIT. At 3 months follow up, BCVA and UCVA between both groups were similar (P=0.988 and P=0.831 respectively). The complications were also comparable between the groups-commonly corneal oedema, vitreous haemorrhage.
X-NIT is a novel technique for SFIOL by minimising the intra-ocular haptic manipulation that requires expertise and precision.X-NIT is as effective as the time tested HS technique and could be used as an alternative method for sutureless SFIOL.
