Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: RETROSPECTIVE LONGITUDINAL
AIM: To study long term efficacy and safety of 0.01% atropine in myopia control.
METHOD: Children (6-16 years) with progressive myopia on 0.01% atropine with follow-up of 3 years were recruited. Axial length (AL) & spherical equivalent (SE) were noted at baseline & follow-ups. Mean change in myopia progression (MP) and axial length elongation (ALE) were calculated.
Results: 65 children (mean age 10.1±4.01 years) were included. Baseline mean SE in right and left eyes were -6.5±0.5 & -5.9±0.6 D & AL right and left eyes were 24.8±1.3 and 24.16±1.41 mm respectively. At 3 years, mean SE right & left eyes were -7.2±0.5 and -6.8±0.63 D & AL were 25.2±1.3 & 24.6±1.4 mm respectively. Mean MP over 3 years in right & left eyes were 0.7±0.5 and 0.9±0.1 D & ALE in right & left eyes was 0.41±0.2 & 0.44±0.2 mm respectively.
Conclusion: Low dose atropine demonstrates both safety and a measure of efficacy for myopia control in Indian eyes over an extended duration.
