VT0606 : ADVANCED MIVS CUTTER – LET’S SAY GOODBYE TO BIMANUAL SURGERY IN TRACTIONAL RETINAL DETACHMENT

Abstract

Tractional Retinal detachments are considered one of the most complex vitreo-retinal surgeries. If we add densely adherent posterior fibrovascular proliferation with broad based epicentres; it becomes a tremor inducing case.
Such cases usually warrant the use of bimanual dissection for the membranes. We have demonstrated 4 such cases in which we have used the latest generation cutter unimanually to complete the membrane dissection.
The latest generation cutters having a dual blade technology, dual pneumatic actuation design and a modifiable duty cycle decrease the turbulence of the nearby structures making it safe and efficient. The bevel-tip design allows us go near the retina without causing any damage to it. With this combination, these types of cutters these days can be used as forceps, scissors and a dissector all at once – facilitating complex membrane dissections and thereby decreasing the need for a bimanual surgery thus effectively decreases the surgical time and complexity.
