Abstract
We describe surgical management of large intercalary staphyloma presenting as a complication of scleritis in systemically inadequately treated Hansen’s disease.
A 55-year-old male, with leprosy since 10 years presented as sclerouveitis. He later missed follow-ups, stopped anti-leprosy therapy to present with scleritis and a large, hanging intercalary staphyloma.
We performed layered dissection followed by scleral deroofing of the hanging staphyloma. The edges of sclera were noted to be ragged and irregular, were structured with double-breasted technique. Globe integrity was achieved with scleral patch graft over this area and instillation of bandage contact lens over cornea.
Lepromatous scleritis is usually a recurrent entity, with rare cases warranting surgical correction. Scleral deroofing procedure and tectonic patch graft under oral anti-leprosy drugs may be an effective treatment alternative for large outpouching intercalary staphyloma.
