Abstract

This video highlights the story of a blind couple who brought their 2-week-old premature baby (first born male child at 32 weeks of gestation, birth wt.1100gms) with bilateral enlarged and cloudy eyes. EUA established the diagnosis of primary congenital glaucoma in both eyes and there was no ROP. Primary combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy was performed at 3rd week of birth. Six weeks postoperatively, the child had clear corneas and the IOP was normal in both eyes.

At 2-year postoperative visit, the child’s visual acuity was 6/6 in both eyes. Parents were elated about their child being of immense help at home and for their outdoor mobility. They believe that their child will act as their sighted guide rendering their cane to be redundant. While clicking a photo of the child along with his father, the child responded by saying ‘SMILE (Surgical Management Infused Lives with Ecstasy)’ spontaneously and this spread a sense of delight among the eye care personnel and the family.
