Abstract

Aim: Knowledge of the anatomy of Levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) is imperative to the success of ptosis surgery. There exists significant controversy with respect to fatty infiltration of LPS, septal anatomy, etc. Cadaveric studies as well as dynamic magnetic resonance imaging have all tried to unravel these variations most of which are observable intra-operatively. There is still equivocal thoughts on the ideal approach to surgeries involving the levator. We aim to demonstrate these variations which could be the first step to better understanding of the same. Methods: A demonstration of various types of blepharoptosis is made with clinical and intra-operative videographic images. Results: Anatomical variations are correlated with clinical features. Surgical guidelines for various types of blepharoptosis are described. Conclusion: Comprehension of clinically relevant factors that could affect the planning as well outcome of surgeries involving the levator is paramount.
