Abstract
The purpose of our study was to analyse the polymorphisms eNOS 786 and eNOS 894 on preterm babies developing ROP.
A prospective study conducted in a tertiary care centre in South India over 1 year. We collected the buccal swab DNA samples from 100 preterm babies (GA < 34 weeks and Birth weight < 1750 grams) and studied 2 SNPs extracted from these samples- eNOS 786 and eNOS 894. The babies were routinely screened for ROP from third week of their life, and followed up till retina matured or ROP was detected and treated till it regressed.
24 babies developed ROP, out of which 9.8% required treatment. On genetic analysis, preterm babies developing ROP had a greater Odd’s ratio with TT genotype as well as T allele for eNOS 894 SNP (p=0.013 and p=0.02 respectively). Whereas in eNOS 786 SNP, T allele had greater association in babies developing ROP (p=0.002).
It will gives a better understanding of the pathogenesis of ROP and direct towards further novel treatment abiding by this mechanism.
