Abstract

Study Design: Retrospective analysis.Purpose: Lacrimal sump syndrome is an uncommon cause of failed dacryocystorhinostomy. The major cause reported is a small osteotomy. Here, I am describing a lacrimal sump syndrome with a large intranasal ostium following External dacryocystorhinostomy. Methods: A 51-year-old female patient suffered a recurrence of epiphora and regurgitation of pus on pressure over the lacrimal sac following an Ext.DCR.Examination showed a large intranasal ostium with a lot of purulent discharge and patent lacrimal irrigation. Lacrimal sump syndrome was diagnosed after passing a probe into the newly formed passage. The newly formed passage was reopened and the sump was excised. Results: The clinical symptoms disappeared after the surgery.Conclusion: It is indicated that lacrimal sump syndrome does happen not only in a small intranasal ostium but also in a large intranasal ostium. An existing residual sac with bacterial infection may be related to this case.
