Abstract
Aim:To study the association between circumpapillary(cp)RNFL thickness and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (AD)
METHODS:Cross sectional study(Aug-Oct23) of 40 eyes of 40 patients with AD presenting to Neurology OPD of tertiary healthcare hospital evaluated.cpRNFL thickness in all 4 quadrants was measured by using SD-OCT.Global cognitive function evaluated by MMSE(Mini Mental State Evaluation) score.p value<•05 statistically significant.
RESULT:cpRNFL significantly thinner for AD globally and temporosuperior(TS) quadrant. The MMSE scores had a positive correlation with cpRNFL thickness and retinal thickness (RT) in TS quadrant(r=•52,p<•001&r=•34,p<•001) respectively
CONCLUSION: Our study shows there is a positive correlation between RT and cognitive impairment in AD. This suggests that cpRNFL thickness measurement can be used to assess cognitive decline in AD to identify patients who would benefit from early therapy to delay onset of dementia.
