Abstract

Study design: Retrospective observational study
Purpose: To evaluate the visual outcome of IOL Exchange in cases of visually significant opacified IOL.
Methods: The study included 10 patients who underwent IOL exchange for opacified IOL between September 2021 and August 2023. The outcome measures are the type of secondary IOL used, intraoperative and postoperative complications, postoperative refraction and visual acuity.
Results: Total 10 eyes of 10 patients were included in the study. In 6 cases the capsular bag had to be removed and retro-fixated iris claw IOL was implanted. In the rest 4 cases the capsular bag could be preserved and 3 piece foldable IOL was implanted in sulcus. Postoperatively 9 patients had a best corrected visual acuity of 6/9 and one patient had 6/24.
Conclusion: A visually significant opacified IOL can be exchanged with a good postoperative outcome. The choice of secondary IOL depends upon the status of the capsular bag after explantation of the opacified IOL.
