FP0736 : Heal it: the blanket way: Amniotic Membrane Inlay Overlay Grafting for Persistet Epithelial Defects

Abstract

Study design: Retrospective study of 20 eyes who underwent AMT for PED
Purpose:To determine the effect of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) on persistent corneal epithelial defects (PEDs) and compare efficacy between inlay and overlay technique

Methods: AMT was done on persistent epithelial defects in 12 overlay (group A) 8 inlay (group B)
Results: PED healed after AMT in 16 eyes (75%) in 21 days, and recurred in 4 eyes (25%)
Among 12 eyes treated with overlay AMT (group A), PED healed after AMT in 9 eyes (75%) in 20.5 days , recurred in 3 eyes (25%).

Among 8 eyes treated with inlay AMT (group B), PED healed after AMT in 7 eyes (87.5%) and recurred in 1 (12.5%) eye.
PED healed in 18.5 days after AMT, which did not statistically significantly differ from group A (P> 0.5).

Conclusion: AMT can be helpful in treatment of PED when other conventional management procedures have failed.
3 eyes in group A and 1 eye in group B showed recurrences of epithelial defects.
