FP0068 : Lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis: a rare case report from Central India

Abstract

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic, granulomatous disease primarily affecting mucous membranes. It is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an aquatic protistan parasite. The most commonly affected site is the nose, observed in 83.3% of cases, followed by ocular involvement in 11.2% of cases, which is referred to as Oculosporidiosis. Ocular rhinosporidiosis in India affects conjunctiva in 69%, lacrimal sac in 24%, canaliculi in 4%, lids and sclera in 4%. We present a case study of a lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis in a 25-year-old girl with history of pond bath who presented with non-tender boggy swelling of the lacrimal sac area. Diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis is made by routine histological examination after surgical excision
