FP0657 : Serratia marcescens endophthalmitis: the curious cases of pink hypopyon

Abstract

Study Design:Consecutive case series

Purpose:To report the clinical features, biochemical profile and visual outcomes associated with Serratia endophthalmitis.

Methods:A case series of 3 patients with culture-positive endophthalmitis from September 1,2021 to December 31,2022.

Results:2 patients presented after injection Anti-VEGF(n=2) and post cataract surgery(n=1). All patients had pigmented hypopyon(n=3),anterior chamber reaction with presenting visual acuity(VA) hand movement or worse. Aqueous and vitreous tap was performed with intravitreal injections of Ceftazidime and Vancomycin. Serratia marcescens was isolated on nutrient agar from vitreous biopsy of all patients(n=3) sensitive to Imipenem and Ceftazidime. All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy and 1 was eviscerated. Final VA was no PL(n=1) and PL only(n=2).

Conclusion:A characteristic presentation of pink hypopyon suggests S.marcescens and should prompt thorough investigations with aggressive treatment.
