Abstract
Study design: Retrospective
Purpose: To assess efficacy and safety of retropupillary iris-claw intraocular lens (ICIOL) implantation in patients with low (<1000 cells/mm2) endothelial cell count (ECC)
Methods: The records of patients whose preoperative ECC was <1000 cells/mm2 and who underwent ICIOL implantation between 2021 and 2023 were analyzed. The outcome measures included corneal endothelial function and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA).
Results: 10 eyes of 10 patients were included. Minimum follow-up duration was 6 months. No patients developed bullous keratopathy. There was no statistically significant decrease in ECC, coefficient variation of cell area (CV) and percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX) at the last follow-up compared to preoperative values (P=0.3,0.45,0.63). The mean UDVA improved significantly from 1 logMAR to 0.23 logMAR at the last follow-up (P<0.01).
Conclusions: ICIOL in patients with extremely low ECC (< 1000 cells/mm2) is a safe and effective option.
