FP0496 : STUDY ON TYPES OF CORNEAL ULCER IN A TERTIARY EYE HOSPITAL

Abstract

STUDY DESIGN: Institution based prospective observational study of cross-sectional design
STUDY PURPOSE: To study the types of corneal ulcer amongst patients attending a tertiary eye hospital
METHODS: Detailed history and thorough examination of the anterior segment using slit lamp microscopy was done. Corneal scrapings were evaluated in appropriate culture media and with appropriate staining techniques. A standardised form was completed for each patient.
RESULTS: Of all patients, 36.8% were 41-50 yrs of age, 60% were males. 78% patients resided in rural areas, 52% patients were farmers, 52% patients presented in the 2nd-3rd wk. Corneal trauma was reported by 69% patients.38% showed fungal growth and 22% showed bacterial growth on culture. 60% fungus isolated was Aspergillus sp. 39% bacteria isolated was Staphylococcus aureus.
CONCLUSION: Incidence of corneal ulcer and complications caused due to it can be reduced if risk factors can be controlled and treatment starts early.
