FP0049 : Phacotrabeculectomy versus small incision cataract surgery trabeculectomy in glaucoma patients

Abstract

Study design: Retrospective
Purpose: To compare outcomes of Phacotrabeculectomy and small incision cataract surgery (SICS) trabeculectomy
Methods: Patients with co-existing cataract and glaucoma who underwent either SICS-trabeculectomy (Group 1) or phacotrabeculectomy (Group 2) in a community setting were included. The outcome measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell count (ECC), and intra/postoperative complications till 3 months.
Results: 164 eyes of 120 patients were analyzed. CDVA, IOP, and incidence of complications between two groups were not statistically significant (16±2.4 mmHg Group 1, 14±2.8 mmHg Group 2). Postoperative ECC was significantly lesser in Group 1 (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Both techniques were equivalent in providing better IOP control and visual outcomes. However, SICS-trabeculectomy was more endothelium-friendly.
comparable surgical outcomes, when compared with phacoemulsification with trabeculectomy.
