Study Design- Case Report
Purpose – To report a case of delayed onset oculocardiac reflex following pterygium surgery under topical anesthesia.
Methods – A 34-year-old male a case of left eye pterygium. He underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival auto-grafting under topical anesthesia. Patient was asymptomatic till 20-25 minutes post-surgery, when he developed mild pain, irritation and dragging sensations in the left eye along with light-headedness and dizziness. On evaluation, the patient was found to have bradycardia with sinus rhythm and hypotension, with a blood pressure of 78/46 mmHg right arm supine, pulse rate 44/min and SpO2 90% on ambient air. Systemic examination was within normal limits. A diagnosis of OCR was made.
Results – The patient was shifted to the ICU and was managed with a bolus dose of IV normal saline (500ml) and eye patch was removed.
Conclusion- This case highlights the importance of knowledge, precautions and management of OCR in day-care setting.
