Abstract

Methods:prospective,tertiary care hospital-based,double-blinded rct. 152 patients with uncomplicated senile cataract >/=nuc grade III recruited.Exclude:preop ECD<1500 cells/mm³,h/O ocular sx ,other coexisting ocular disease,intraopor postop surgical complications. Preop & postop values of ECD &CCT measured,analyzed,correlated with various factors.Results:Patients randomize to 2 interventional groups-MSICS &phaco.Factorsa/w ↓ in postop ECD foll phaco:patients with↑age(P=0.01),↑cataract (P = 0.01),&longer effective phaco time (P=0.007).Shallow ACDstrongly a/w ↑ ECD loss in both groups(P<0.0001).Threshold value of 2.86mm of ACD defined for minimal endothelial cell loss foll phaco.CCT↑ postop in both groups but insignificant (P>0.05).Conclusion:Both MSICS &phaco:similar visual outcomes.↑ postop CCT insignificant foll sx.↑ postop ECD loss a/w phaco with↑age,hard nuc cataracts&longer EPT.ACD can be used as essential parameter preop to determine choice of surgical technique b/w MSICS & phaco.
