FP3026 : Vascular Occlusion in Young Adults

Abstract

Vascular Occlusion was traditionally considered a disease of old people with most cases presenting in the 5th or 6th decade of life. But of late, an increasing number of cases are being reported among young individuals (people under 50 years of age).

This study aims to elucidate the causes that lead to vascular occlusion among young patients. Clinical features shall be highlighted and a comparison shall be made with clinical features of vascular occlusion among older patients.

We found that stress, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, junk food, and smoking are the leading causes of vascular occlusion in young patients. Symptoms are noted earlier by young patients and hence they report early to the treating physician. Management is essentially the same as in old patients, apart from treating the root cause, but the response to treatment is better among young patients.

Vascular Occlusion among youngsters is a worrisome trend. Efforts need to be made to put a curb on the causative factors.
