FP2950 : Povidone-iodine versus conventional treatment in viral conjunctivitis: novel affordable option

Abstract

Purpose: To study the efficacy of 1% Povidone-iodine (single wash) for management of acute viral conjunctivitis and compare the effectiveness with conventional treatment.
Method: 1260 patients of acute conjunctivitis were included in study, Group A (420) patients received 1% Povidone-iodine (single wash) with the artificial tears, group B (420) were prescribed artificial tears and group C received 0.1% FML only. Response to treatment were recorded on day 1, 2, 3, 7, 10 and 14.
Results: Most Common causative agents were adenovirus and enterovirus. Outcome measures were conjunctival signs and patient satisfaction level. 73%of Group A patients showed complete recovery by 3 to 4 days whereas group B and group C patients took a mean duration of 7.5 days and 12 days respectively
Conclusion and Clinical Implication: 1% Povidone-iodine (single wash) is a affordable option to hasten recovery from viral conjunctivitis and should be included in treatment protocol.
