FP2746 : Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension –protean manifestations and causes of increasing prevalence

Abstract

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), found more often in young, obese women of childbearing age, is becoming commoner. The patient's quality of life may be greatly impacted. The prevalence of obesity has increased. There may be a linkage to environmental microplastics as some molecules and toxins in plastic (e.g. Bisphenol A) are endocrine disruptors and also enhance obesity. Covid has been known to cause increased intracranial pressure or precipitate IIH due to its neurological effects. Clinical findings may include papilloedema. A raised CSF pressure, sans papilloedema, is designated as IIHWOP. Though a raised intracranial pressure on lumbar puncture is diagnostic, some reliance can be placed on CT/MRI findings such as an empty Sella, prominent Meckel’s cave etc. Sometimes, increased intracranial pressure in IIH may paradoxically cause CSF leakage. Such spontaneous skull base cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are a rare entity. A few illustrative cases of IIH are described.
