Abstract
Purpose: To describe the clinical profile of the patients with acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) from a tertiary eye care center of south India.
Methods- Retrospective observational case series studied between Jan 2018 to Jan 2019
Results:
The mean age of presentation was 29.07 ± 9.01 years (range – 17-44 years of age). Male: Female ratio was 2:11. Bilaterality was observed in 8 patients. Most common presenting symptom were photopsia followed by floaters. Visual acuity deteriorated in 3 patients. All the patients were treated with oral corticosteroids. 12 patients were eventually treated with a combination of immunosuppressive agent and systemic corticosteroid.
Conclusions: AZOOR is a rare disease entity in India. Pigmentary changes, extend of ellipsoid layer degeneration and outer plexiform layer changes early at the disease course could be associated with a poorer prognosis. Immunosuppressive agents could play a major role in improving the prognosis
