FP2572 : PULSE study (PUpilmate aided Low-cost pupil Screening and Evaluation study)

Abstract

Aim: To address the critical need for an affordable & accurate tool to assess Relative Afferent Pupillary Defect (RAPD).Study Design: We introduced a frugal, do-it-yourself handheld scotopic binocular pupillometer device called Pupilmate. Its efficiency in RAPD detection was evaluated. Methods: Pupilmate is constructed using Wi-Fi-enabled board cameras, LEDs, online streaming and a cardboard VR headset(cost Rs. 2200/-). In a study involving 216 OPD patients, we compared its performance with the swinging torch light test. Results: Pupilmate proved non-inferior to the swinging torch light test, demonstrating comparable sensitivity & specificity with statistical significance. Pupil reactions were easily recorded & exhibited repeatability. The device offers a cost-effective solution for pupil screening in various clinical settings, including outreach programs & clinics. Conclusion: Pupilmate is an affordable & accessible tool for pupillary response screening and recording.
