FP2535 : To study visual outcome of pediatric traumatic cataract.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION-Pediatric traumatic cataract is one of the leading causes of monocular blindness in children, accounting for29-57%cases.Pediatric eye is in development, and trauma leads to more severe complications.
METHODS-Retrospective analysis of cohort at tertiary eye center.Creation of format, retrieval of data from EMR and analysis by SPS22. Causative agents, types of trauma, surgical interventions, complications, visual acuity compared among different groups.
RESULT-Cohort of 681 children to have undergone surgery for traumatic cataract,Type of primary insult was penetrating injury in 443(65%)and blunt trauma in 237(34.8%).9 patients had vision better than 6/18 and 57 patients had vision of≥6/60.Eyes which underwent primary posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy during cataract surgery showed statistically better visual outcome.
CONCLUSION-Pediatric traumatic cataract should be treated in time to attenuate the complications.
