FP2439 : Writathon in ophthalmology – A catalyst to the residents’ drive for academic growth and development.

Abstract

Purpose: Our institution has been organizing an academic event called Writathon thrice a year during holiday breaks since past 5 years to motivate our residents to achieve significant outcomes in the form of publications. Method: During the Writathon, residents are assigned a topic to work on for an entire day. Access to electronic medical record system and internet is provided for data collection. Mentorship are offered by their thesis advisors, and are encouraged to choose journals for publishing their work based on the impact factor. Result: We had substantial increase in our research publications over the past few years, along with the incorporation of many innovative ideas. More than 300 articles have been published in reputed journals, and some of our work received awards at both the national and international level. Conclusion: The Academic Writathon has effectively cultivated a research-oriented culture among our residents, thereby enhancing the quality of ophthalmic education.
